We share with you below the best Halal restaurants in Edmonton. For those that don’t know what halal means, it simply is the word lawful or permitted in Arabic and is food permissible under Islamic law. For an animal meat to be labelled halal, it must be healthy, alive and conscious when it is killed.
The animal must have its jugular vein, carotid artery and windpipe severed in order to drain out all of the blood from the corpse. Eating of the blood is forbidden in Islam. A Muslim performs this procedure and recites the tasmiya or shahada while doing so. There is a lot more to it, however this is the Coles notes version.
Turquaz Kebab House (https://www.turquazkebabhouse.com/)
This Turkish-Lebanese fusion restaurant first opened its doors in 2011. “We aim to bring in top quality halal meats and products, grilled to perfection on real charcoal, to bring delicious and generous comfort food to your table. Our bakery uses a stone oven in house for fresh and steamy baked goods.”
Their kebabs and shawarmas seem to be most popular. I personally would opt for something a bit different with their beef iskender plate which is beef shawarma meat in a tomato based sauce and melted butter served over fresh roasted bread w/ a side of yogurt.
Best Kabab (https://bestkabab.wordpress.com/)
Former patrons of Best Kabab flood their Facebook page comments with how their restaurant is one of the things they miss most about Edmonton. With so many great reviews you can see why Best Kabab is one of the best halal restaurants in Edmonton. When it comes to quantity, they don’t shy out on serving sizes. There is also a great welcoming family atmosphere there as well.
Select restaurant (https://www.selectrestaurant.ca/)
Select Restaurant is a fine dining experience which offers cuisine from India, Italy and North America. Their butter chicken and garlic naan is to rave for. The prawn biriyani is also a big seller there as well. Fresh ingredients, tender meat and a wonderfully attentive staff are other reasons why Select Restaurant made it on our list of best halal restaurants in Edmonton.
Paramount fine foods (https://paramountfinefoods.com/)
Freshy baked breads and charcoal barbecued meats sound good? Sure does to me! Paramount fine foods serves you only the freshest of ingredients while savoring middle eastern cuisine. Their portions are HUGE, service is on point and Edmontonians just can’t get enough of the delightful cuisine.
Shiraz Restaurant (https://www.shiraz-restaurant.com/)
Shiraz is a Persian restaurant that offers catering services as well. Kebabs and Iranian dishes are some of their specialties. Each dish is filled with flavor and spice that takes your tastebuds on an epic journey of bliss. All the food is great, however the Khoresht Fesenjoon was my favorite.
Al Salam Restaurant and bakery (https://www.alsalampita.ca/)
When many hear Al Salam they think of Pita. Yes, they have some of the best pita in town, however their dishes are also noteworthy. Their hummus and tzatziki are perfection and pair perfectly with the fresh pita. If you’re looking to try something tasty and new go for the Man’Oushe which are Lebanese style pizza pies baked on fresh dough.
The bedouins (https://thebedouins.ca/)
Definitely some of the best presentation and food plating I’ve seen in Alberta. For those looking to experience something new outside their normal kebab and shawarma comfort zone, then try The bedouins. Reservations are recommended as this is one of Canada’s best North African cuisine establishments.
Kurry Kebab (https://kurrykebab.ca/)
Kurry Kebab sources most of their ingredients primarily from local farmers markets. Suresh in an excellent Chef that is skilled in both Indian and middle eastern cuisine. The food is fantastic and what you would expect an an upscale restaurant.
Haweli Indian Kitchen and bar (https://hawelicanada.com/haweli-indian-kitchen-bar-south-common)
The atmosphere is what initially drew me in as everything was beautifully decorated and the music just added positively to the overall experience. The food was perfectly seasoned and spiced. My only feedback was that although the service was great, it was slow so just mentally prepare yourself for that before you go in.
Shish Shawarma (https://myshawarma.ca/)
Authentic award winning Lebanese cuisine food is what you’ll receive when coming to Shish Shawarma. Some customers have called their food life changing. Their traditional plates are my favorite and are served up in hefty portions. They do have lunch sized meals if you’re not looking to loosen a few belt notches.
